About The Collections

Visual Collections are collections of digital images of maps, photographs and other visual materials. Most visual collections consist of images of items in the collections of the libraries of the public universities of Florida and of partnering institutions. The collections have been digitized as part of the PALMM (Publication of Archival, Library and Museum Materials) program of the public university system.

Visual Collections allows you to look for images in multiple collections at the same time, or within a single image collection. To search multiple collections simultaneously, use the search box on the home page. Make sure all the collections you want to search are checked, and click the “search checked collections” button. Sometimes features are available within individual collections that are not available when searching all collections. For example, the World Map Collection interface allows you to search or browse all maps within a particular geographic region. To search only a single collection, click on its name in the collection list. For more information about searching Visual Collections, see Help Using This Site.

Visual Collections runs on DLXS software from the University of Michigan Digital Library Production Service. Descriptive information is searched using the XPAT full text search engine, and images are displayed using Image Class middleware. See the DLXS website for more information.
