SELECTING COLLECTIONS TO SEARCH

Visual Collections allows you to look for images in multiple collections at the same time, or within a single image collection. To search multiple collections simultaneously, use the search box on the home page. Make sure all the collections you want to search are checked, and click the "search checked collections" button. Sometimes features are available within individual collections that are not available when searching all collections. For example, the World Map Collection interface allows you to search or browse all maps within a particular geographic region. To search a single collection, click on its name in the collection list.

SEARCH TIPS

Matching terms. Enter the word or phrase you want to search in the search box. Multiple words entered in a single search box will be treated as a phrase; that is, "world war" will match "world war II" but not "world at war". To find any image description containing the words "world" and "war", use two search boxes connected by "and".

Punctuation. Any punctuation in your search or in the image description is treated as a blank space. The searches "Mexico--maps" and "Mexico maps" will both find descriptions containing "Mexico--maps".

Capitalization. Capitalization is ignored. The searches "Mexico" and "mexico" are equivalent, and will both find descriptions containing "Mexico".

Truncation. To search on part of a word, use an asterisk. The search "wom*" will find "woman" and "women" (not to mention "wombat").

VIEWING YOUR SEARCH RESULTS

Images with captions. If your search matches any image description, a thumbnail of the matching image(s) will display in the "Images with captions" format. From this display you can click on any thumbnail to get a "Full image" view of that image, or you can ask to see your results in the "Images with description" or "Descriptions only" formats.

Full image. This view opens in a separate browser window. It is the best display for viewing and manipulating an image. To make the entire image larger or smaller, click one of the boxes on the "size" scale. To zoom in on a particular spot (make the image larger) click the plus (+) and then click on the image where you want to center the zoom. To zoom out (make the image smaller) click on the minus (-). Once you have zoomed on the image, you can move the whole image in any direction by clicking on the up, down, right or left arrows of the "pan" icon.

On the Full image view, you can scroll through the other images in your retrieval set by clicking on "next item" or "previous item", or you can return to the Images with captions display of your search results. Other options are "Description" which shows you the full description of the selected image, and "Other views", which will show you related images. For example, photographs of the front and back of a building might be related as "other views.

To exit the Full image view, the Description view, or Other views, close the browser window.

Images with description. This display will show you thumbnails of your retrieval set, with the full description of one selected image in a frame on the left. To see a different description, click the "descriptive info" link under the image you want to see. If you click the thumbnail image itself, a Full image view will open in a separate browser window.

Description only. This view shows only descriptions of the images in your retrieval set. Words matching your search will be highlighted. Descriptions can be sorted by Title, Creator or Date using the "Sort by" box in the upper right corner. To see the image associated with any description, click "View full image" and a Full image view will open in a separate browser window.
